            AGC                 Automatic Gain Control

            AM                  Amplitude modulation
            AMVER               Automated Mutual-assistance Vessel Rescue System. This is
                                a   vessel   position-reporting   system   operated   by  the  U.S.
                                Coast  Guard for any merchant of 1000 grt or greater on a
                                voyage of more than 24 hours, to and from anywhere on the
                                globe.

            AOR-E               Atlantic Ocean Region-East

            AOR-W               Atlantic Ocean Region-West

            ARQ                 Automatic Request for Repeat (Radiotelex)

            ARCC                Aeronautical Rescue Co-ordination Centre
            ASCII               American Standard Code for Information Interchange

            ATU                 Antenna Tunning Unit

            AUSREP              Vessel   position-reporting   system   similar   to   AMVER   but
                                operated by the Australian Authorities.

            Bit                 The basic unit of digital communications, may be 0 or 1
            Bps                 Bits per second. This is a unit of measurement for speed

            Byte                1 byte = 8 bits = 1 alfanumeric character

            CES                 Coast Earth Station

            CH70                VHF channel 70 (DSC)
